Teenage Tips Theres Too Much Choice

Lack of focus is the frustration of many of todays young people rather than too much choice a recurring challenge from my work in schools and colleges.
Since when was choice a bad thing let alone too much choice Ask anyone who has experience of where choice is limited or poverty widespread why they look to move and unequivocally the underlying reason is choice and opportunity.
Choice equals opportunity and never has there been a better time to have both regardless of where you are starting from and regardless of age and ability.
So how do you create focus Here are some short sharp tips
1. Get a dedicated notebook for this exercise.
2. Start by writing down all of the options after all this is what they are at the moment. You havent made a choice yet.
3. How much do you really know about these options Investigate your current options further. The internet is much more powerful and useful than just speaking to your friends on instant messenger start digging its yo...

Impermanence

The concept of my job is a fluid one as we have all been reminded by the current financial climate and the recent agreement by General Motors to sell a majority share in GM Europe.

My parents generation were the last who really could look at a job for life. There is no such thing as my job we only undertake a role on behalf of someone while it remains feasible. Business constantly needs to adapt and so do the roles required.

Fear sets in when individuals live to the means a salary allows however never more has a contingency plan been a vital part of life. We can choose to react to events preferring situations to stay the same or be proactive to be able to ride the peaks and troughs of lifes rollercoaster.

During the summer I spent some time on the beach with my three year old son building sand castles. This is an excellent metaphor for life nothing stays the same. Not just in the tide eventually washing them away but also the joy in my sons face as he squashes each one th...

Proof that Exam pressure is getting out of hand for 10 and 11 Year Olds

A recent article in the Bucks Herald New business aims to get children through 11 7th September 2009 was brought to my attention by a good friend and prolific writer on social and political matters Simon Icke.

The article informs of a company whose focus is providing further tuition and coaching for students who have the opportunity of taking the 11 Exams. For those unfamiliar with this term 11 is an exam which is used to assess if pupils may have access to a Grammar School rather than a State Comprehensive. Traditionally this has been perceived to provide a better education.

The challenge here is that no one knows the pass mark. There are a limited number of places available therefore should the quota be fulfilled with a pass mark of 90 89 will not make the cut. The next year 85 may be adequate. You can see the dilemma already.

I have recently been in discussion with a Primary School where the pupils do have the option of 11. It is a time of immense stress for pupils...

Stigma has been abolished. To live on benefits has become a lifestyle choice reflects some of my coaching experiences in schools where young people know what is involved to obtain Local Authority housing without appreciation of the economic implications and where the money really comes from to provide these resources. And if they do have an understanding it doesnt bother them.

A recent article in the Sunday Times by onetime Conservative Cabinet Minister Michael Portillo Idle young should be entitled to nothing 30th August highlights some interesting points and raises many questions.

Many young people balk at the thought of the word effort in any form from their own achievements and wellbeing to making a contribution to society in any form be it through tax contributions or other actions. Its someone elses problem or job.

Losing an Education

Two recent press articles cover different subjects however they have much in common.

The first article Pupils Taught to TestThe Times 24th August 20091 discusses research which demonstrates that the focus of schools is to get students through their exams. The second article Students Buy A Level Essays The Time 24th August 2009 2 states that students are buying essays at a cost of 163700 each in an attempt to improve their grades and hence chances of a place at their university of choice. It also quotes that parents were buying essays on behalf of their children.

Both of these articles highlight too much short term focus at the cost of gaining an education that will last a lifetime and an inability to work out a solution to overcome a personal challenge. In the UK too much emphasis is placed upon exam results school league tables and university entry requirements rather than the bigger picture.

Should we really be surprised that so many young people are unable to cope with situations without resorting to physical and verbal abuse Telegraph 30th July 2009 And that so many teachers are unable to cope when these situations arise

If modern society is reflected by the content of TV and Films then there is increasingly the victim and aggressor mentality. If something happens we dont like it is easier to take either an aggressive or a passive stance. Both are the result of a lack of confidence.

Of course this is not limited to the education sector and the impact upon society and the economy is significant.

Coaching works with many individuals and groups to promote moving towards and focusing on what we do want rather than pulling away from that we dont.

This raises the question of why if we would like a more peaceful world we continue to use violence as a form of entertainment making it more and more graphic.

Why Young People Shun Organised Activity

A BBC report httpbit.lypg0i0 6th August 2009 claims that young people are shunning out of hours school clubs due to rebelliousness being shy and lazy.

The report goes on to state The governmentbacked study looked at barriers to children taking part and divided them into six groups. These included the notbothereds the authority rejecters and the shy and lacking in confidence along with those who put friends above all else. Ministers urged local councils to let youngsters know what was available.
As a Coach specialising in working with young people to build self confidence for a safe healthy enjoyable life that makes a positive contribution to society there are a several observations to make.
1. In the UK we have a growing habit of providing labels by which people either a get annoyed with or b live down to by this I mean that the label depletes confidence and becomes a selffulfilling prophecy and a downward spiral.

You may be thinking well I have one in my head although its been suggested that sometimes its slipped to other regions of my body

Well you do have three brains. We all do and now its time to start using ALL three to improve YOUR life.

First brain is your GUT. Its that gut feel for something it gives you information through feelings and emotions. This is often referred to as instinct intuition inspiration. Notice when you have these moments that you put your hand to your stomach.

Second brain is your HEART. Your heart brain gives you more information through feelings and emotions you know something with all your heart to be true. Here are a couple of examples common in my work

Well Ive come to school but dont expect me to do any work.
People like meus dont get to do things like that.
Theres not enough timemoney.
I havent spoken to them in so long.
I have to .....go to work go to school do this do that....

Why not go and do it anyway Not sure where to start just pick somewhere. Decide to make the most of it for example your education Google it make a call talk to someone about it share it on your social network commit yourself you never know who they know and who they know who can help you. 10 steps to Personal Power by Ruth Hadikin author of The Bullying Culture and Effective Coaching in Healthcare

Some of the myths that abound about bullying suggest that there is nothing anyone can do about it and that it is up to management to deal with it. In my experience however there is much that we can all achieve as individuals as colleagues and as an organisation.
People who are bullied tend to be individuals who lack belief in themselves and are often overly selfeffacing. They sometimes try too hard to please others in an effort to be liked. I always ask my clients to be selfish enough to put their own needs before those of others. If you are the target of bullying being selfish could even save your life..... Read More

On coming home one day they realized to their dismay that the lifts were not working and that they have to climb the stairs home. After struggling to the 20th level panting and tired they decided to abandon their bags and come back for them the next day.
They left their bags then and climbed on. When they have struggled to the 40th level the younger brother started to grumble and both of them began to quarrel. They continued to climb the flights of steps quarreling all the way to the 60th floor. They then realized that they have only 20 levels more to climb and decided to stop quarreling and continue climbing in peace. They silently climbed on and reached their home at long last.
Each stood calmly before the door and waited for the other to open the door. Read More

Your Performance Your Awareness is about you.

Todays thought...

When things seem like they are worse than ever and there is no way out...know that you are right there... right at the breaking point...there is no other way to go but up.

Sometimes we give up at the exact moment that change is about to occur for the better. If you know you are doing the right thing keep going and you will get the results you are looking for.

Your Performance Your Awareness is about you. Todays thought.

Whatever you want in life you must give up something to get it. The greater the valuethe greater the sacrifice required of you.

Theres a price to pay if you want to make things better and a price youll pay for just leaving things as they are. Nothing worthwhile comes easily to anyone. Work continuous work and hard work is the only way to accomplish results that last.

Dont let the fear of change stop you from pursuing your dreams. There is no success at bargain basement prices.

You must pay a price for success

Having experienced an interactive fun and energetic presentation from Dale at a recent Network Luton session I believe I now understand a little better the work he is doing and who might benefit from it. It is also interesting to see how much sticks a week after the presentation. I believe our recall is based on how quickly we can apply some of the information and how it was presented to us in the first place. If any of us are in a position to give back to society to act as mentors role models or guide younger people so that they have self esteem and a sense of purpose then we can start by learning more about Dales projects.

Here are some of the comments posted on LinkedIn about Dales contribution to the event
It is both rewarding and educational to copresent with Dale. He is thoughtful inspirational and well organised a thorough professional. When delivering a dual presentation there is always a concern that your partner will either hijack the audience or unknowingly create a difficult situation. Not with Dale. I would welcome the opportunity to work with Dale again confident that the outcome will be assured. Paul Hayward

Think about the things you can do. There is no such thing as no chance. You have powers you never dreamed of. You can do things you never thought you could do.

There are no limitations to what you can do except the limitations of your own mind. Your range of available choices right now is limitless. Look at things as they can be.

Meeting the Challenge of PSHCE

Personal social and emotional development cannot be taught results are achieved when it is facilitated and comes from within. In addition to delivering prescribed facts it needs to be integrated into all educational activities lessons and the culture.

Many teachers tell me that they do not know where to start and where they do have to deliver such lessons they cant wait to get it over with. Another challenge seems to be engaging young people for 30 minutes to an hour.

While some areas are clearly factual such as the history and structure of our political system much of what PSHCE Every Child Matters and SEAL require is the individual developing an understanding about them as an individual their contribution to society and understanding that where we are now in life is a result of what we know through our interaction with others our upbringing and education. Individuals should also be encouraged to challenge at every point who knows they may be the one to develop a new financi...

If as James Wray is often quoted intention goes where energy flows how does anybody stand a chance of success with this media imposed handicap before they even start
As I was once told by the most pessimistic person I have ever met it means Im never disappointed well if it means never having aspiration excitement and passion Ill opt for optimism and the occasional disappointment every time. This raises the question does a pessimist live in constant disappointment anyway and what gives them the right to suppose this towards others efforts
Admittedly we have a location at Wimbledon named after a player who never set the tennis world alight is this the best we can do celebrate close but no cigar Is it that close is something most of us can relate to more...

Your Performance Your Awareness is about you. Todays thought

Do you feel worthy of having joy Do you feel you deserve it The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others.

Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.
If we dont forgive ourselves for our mistakes and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt because guilt is isolating while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves to other people and to a larger whole.

The proposal is to bring the academic skills supplied by Kip McGrath in reading spelling english and maths together with the life skill development of Stress Free adding further value to franchisee service offering for both parents and children already engaged with their services and those who may not be.
Significant interest was shown following Dales presentation and Dale has already had a number of meetings with Franchisees individually to discuss the strategy at a local level as this is very much dependent upon demographics and local markets with more meetings to come.
Your Performance Your Awareness is about you. Todays thought

If you dont run your own life someone else will. Youre in control of your life to the degree that you make decisions.

To control the outcome of anything you control the action at the point of decision making. If you let others make decisions for you you give up control.

When you control the decisions you control the actions. Take charge of your life so there is no longer a need to ask permission of others.

When you ask permissionyoure giving someone veto power over your life. Only you are responsible for your life. Take control and start making those decisions.

Make The Right Choices from Baiju Solanki

Your Performance Your Awareness is about you. Todays thought

Your success is not a matter of idle chance its a matter of making the right choices. Success is not something you wait for but rather something you achieve with effort.

Things wont turn up in this world until you turn them up. Success is neither magical nor mysterious. The people that truly succeed in the world are the people who look for the circumstances they want and if they cant find them they make them.

Dont sit on the sidelines get in the game. Your access to success has no real limits. The great opportunity in your life is where you are right now.

Every situation properly perceived becomes an opportunity for you. You have grand opportunities all around you. Open your eyes and you will find it. If you have the desire you have the power to be successful.

Taking continuous action is all that is required.
